Sometimes I forget I love metal or progressive rock and then I stumble across Ghost Reveries and re-educate myself. Here’s a few things that are perfect about it:
-The production.
-The songwriting.
-‘Atonement’.
-The balance of metal and folk music (NO-ONE ELSE can do this well*).
-The guitar solos.
-The mellotron sound.
-The artwork.
-‘Hours of Wealth’.
-Mikael Akerfeldt.
-The guitar tone.
-The part that starts at 2:06 in ‘The Baying of the Hounds’.
-The whole fucking thing.I wasn’t really a fan of death metal vocals until I bought this (in conjunction with Damien Rice’s O. So there’s that) and I’m still not really, but on this album they’re completely at home and sound perfect and oh my god this is the best album ever. I’m so distraught that the Opeth/Mastodon tour is only in the US. Otherwise I think I’d try and catch a few dates because JESUS what a show that’d be.
*Without being slightly comical. See: Turisas.
I agree with this post in its entirety. Ghost Reveries is my favorite album overall, my favorite Opeth album, and it got me into death metal and metal in general (and Opeth :P). It’s fantastic, though often underappreciated.
